Where Are You Headed?

There is a verse in the Old Testament book that has always stopped me in my tracks.

Haggai 1:5 says, “Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘Give careful thought to your ways.’” (NIV)

In Hebrew, this phrase is a figure of speech that literally means: “Put your heart on your roads.”

In other words, God is lovingly asking His people to pause, look around, and pay attention to the direction their lives are headed. He’s essentially saying, “Look at where you’re going. If you keep doing what you’re doing, do you really want to end up where this road is taking you?”

Another way to say it is simply: Consider your ways.

It’s such a gentle but honest invitation.

So let me ask you:
Is what you’re doing today taking you down a road you want to be on tomorrow?
Is it helping you become more like the person God has called you to be—or slowly pulling you away from that person?

What road are you on right now?

And if you don’t like where that road is headed, here’s the good news: you don’t have to keep going that way.

You can stop.
You can turn around.
You can ask God for new direction.

But let’s be honest—change is rarely easy.
It always requires humility.
It requires admitting, “Maybe this isn’t the road I thought it was.”

No one has ever said, “Wow, I’m so glad I waited this long to change.”

The longer we stay on the wrong road, the harder the journey becomes.
And yet, even here, God is so kind.
Scripture reminds us in Lamentations 3:22–23: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (NIV)

No matter how far you’ve gone, God’s compassion meets you right where you are—and offers you a fresh start.

So today, put your heart on your roads.
Pay attention to the direction of your life.
And if God is gently whispering, “There’s a better way,” don’t ignore Him.
Turn around.
Take His hand.
And start walking in a new direction.
