Keep Going

Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.  Hebrews 12:1-2 NLT

The eleventh chapter of Hebrews is often called the “Hall of Faith”.

It tells the stories of those who served God with great passion and unflinching faithfulness through the toughest of times.

They suffered, risked, obeyed and trusted God to do what only He can do.

This verse says that the way they lived their lives, and seeing how they trusted God, is like having a great grandstand of people cheering you on as you follow Jesus.

What are they telling you?

They are telling you to throw off everything that hinders and run the race God has called you to run.

Not your mom’s race or your neighbor’s faith race but your faith race.

They are telling you to keep focused on the finish line and lay down whatever is weighing you down from getting there: other people’s opinions, irrational fears,  fear-laden doubts, time-wasting worries.

They know that a life of faith isn’t easy and that the only way you can do it is by keeping your eyes on Jesus.

Keep your eyes on Jesus, my friend, take a deep breath and run your race.

Pace Setter

There are a lot of things (and relationships) that fight to be the pace setter for your life:

Your job
Your goals
Your family
Your church
Your significant other
Your health

The above vie for first place and then are complicated by the list below:

Fear of failure
People pleasing
The past

It is easy to see how your life can begin to feel like more of a blur than a blessing.

If you don’t choose your pace setter- the most urgent crisis will always beat out the rest.

But God wants to be the Pace Setter for your life.

Your only Pace Setter.

He wants to help you run your race at the right pace for you.

“What we’ve learned is this: God does not respond to what we do; we respond to what God does. We’ve finally figured it out.

Our lives get in step with God and all others by letting him set the pace, not by proudly or anxiously trying to run the parade.” (‭Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭27-28‬ MSG)

What would happen if you began to run your race at God’s pace and no one else’s?

What would your life look like?

What would need to be cut out?

What needs to be added?

Run Your Race

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (‭Hebrews‬ ‭12‬:‭1-2 NIV)

It isn’t going to be easy.

It is going to take perseverance.

And you can’t compare your race with anyone else’s- it is yours, unique to you.

That is why you can’t look to anyone else but Jesus. He is the only one who can help you navigate it.

He knows the way you take. He knows what it will take and how to get you through the rough parts that will make you want to quit.

He knows what He has gifted you with and how to help you use it to bring glory to the Father.

Fix your eyes on Jesus and run your race.
