Great is His Faithfulness

‬‬I remember a time a few years ago when I was discouraged and heartbroken.

My hopes had been swept away by a flood of circumstances fueled by other people’s choices and actions. I chose integrity but no one else saw it that way. My character was questioned. My reputation was shredded and I could do nothing about it.

I could only walk forward into a future that I had not anticipated or imagined.

I clung to Jesus. I grabbed hold of the promise that He would never leave me or forsake me. I tried to trust that He could redeem the circumstances as I watched everything we had built crumble around us. I tried and failed- I couldn’t find trust or hope within my soul. Only heartbreak and fear.

Psalms 119:116 became the words I held onto:

Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.”

One morning I got up early and took a walk. We were living in Las Vegas and my neighborhood edged the desert by the Red Rock. With worship music loaded on my iPod, I set out to pray and breathe in the presence of God.

As I turned the corner out of my neighborhood and onto the desert road behind it the song “Great is Thy Faithfulness” began. The sun was just rising over Red Rock Canyon and it was so beautiful that I almost dropped to my knees.

I heard God’s whisper in my heart, “Hold on precious, your hopes are not lost. I am faithful to complete what I have started in you. I will sustain you through this and strengthen you in it. My faithfulness knows no end.”

It was a turning point for me. I carried that promise through a time that got harder long before it got better.

Hold on, my friend, your hopes are not lost.

Jesus is faithful to complete what He started in you.

He will sustain you and strengthen you in it.

God’s faithfulness knows no end.

Desperate

desperate-quote-3-picture-quote-1

“Desperate, I throw myself on you: you are my God! Hour by hour I place my days in your hand, safe from the hands out to get me.”
Psalm 31:14, 15 MSG
You are desperate when you have run out of options and have done all you can with what you have and come up wanting.
You are desperate when you realize you have no control. No control over how others react. No control what others think. No control of what others choose.
Desperation feels horrid. It feels scary.
And yet desperation drives us to our knees.
It drives us to an honest place where we admit we have no power and no actual control.
It is the realization that we are impotent to procure any real change, unable to bring about that which we desire.
When we have nothing left, we have everything to gain.
Why? Because it is when we throw ourselves on the mercy of God and admit the truth that we are human and not small gods. We are mortal and God is the immortal, all-powerful, omniscient God.
It is actually the safest place to be when we feel the most vulnerable.
When you are just surviving hour by hour- you find God is walking with you minute by minute.
“…for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down(relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!] “
Hebrews 13:5 AMP
If you are in a desperate place right now, throw yourself on God, because you are in good hands when you are in His hands.
Are you in a desperate place?
What can I pray for you?
What does walking with God minute by minute look like to you right now?

Live It

Being right with God isn’t the hard part, the hard part is learning how to live it out.
You have lived a long time being broken. A long time learning how to cope with it, how to function in it. The good news of Jesus Christ is that He has taken your brokenness upon himself and in return offers you wholeness. To restore your mind, heart, soul, and spirit to God’s original design.
He wants to teach you a new way to live.
How to live whole and treasured.
How to live trusting and trusted.
How to live nurtured and nourished.
How to love and be loved.
“He got us out of the mess we’re in and restored us to where he always wanted us to be. And he did it by means of Jesus Christ.” (‭Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭21-24‬ MSG)
It takes time and perseverance.
God provides the time, we provide the perseverance.
Don’t give up.
Every day you are learning how to live restored in Christ.

Who you were created to be

Don’t stop going after all God has for you just because you are not where you want to be.
Sometimes the journey seems short when you look at all Jesus has already done for you.
Sometimes the journey seems long when you see how far you still have to go.
If Paul the Apostle felt this way, don’t be so hard on yourself when you do:
“Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.
Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead, I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.”

He is working the past out of you so that you can embrace the future He has for you.

When You Feel Like Giving Up

When you feel like giving up, don’t.
There are gifts that only come by facing the hard things.
There is growth that only comes from holding onto God through the toughest times.
There is maturity that only develops as you persevere when everything around you is uncomfortable, difficult and hard.
“Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:4 NIV)
Don’t give up.
Hold on to Jesus like He is your Savior and let perseverance complete you.
If you quit halfway through you will never know what God has for you.  He has a plan to complete you, to bring you to wholeness, to bring the parts that are broken and disconnected together knitted by His grace restored by His strength completed by His love.
Don’t quit. Buckle down, hold on and keep working.
You are worth it.

Small Touches

Love never gives up”.
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:4 MSG‬‬

So much can be communicated through a small touch.

A reassuring pat of the hand.

A hug.

A gentle tug on the elbow of someone who you want closer.

Holding a hand.

A small touch can make a bad thing okay, an okay thing good and make a good thing great.

Small touches are difference makers in a relationship, in a life.

They can be the first thing we unconsciously give and the first thing that we unconsciously withhold.

When we struggle, we when are angry, when we are hurt, we withhold the small touches.

It’s easy to forget how important they are to us and to those we love.

Wherever you are at in any of your relationships it might be a small touch that makes a difference.

Don’t worry about starting big- start small.

What small touch do you need to receive?

What small touch do you need to give?

Guard Your Heart

Some seasons are harder than others.

Sometimes the hard times, harden your heart. It may feel like hardening your heart would easier than feeling the pain in it but it is not. Your heart is made to feel, it can handle it. It was made to process the pain but hardening your heart is like locking the pain inside with no way out.

Don’t give up.

Push through the hard parts but don’t lose your heart.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

    ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4:23‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Guard it, grow it, fill it.

Don’t just get through your present struggle, process it all the way through. Feel it, embrace the pain and let it work all the through and out.

You can get through it with your heart still poised to love.

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing.

If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭13:1-3‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The interesting thing here is that you can speak with power, have great understanding and be utterly selfless and be devoid of love.

Guard your heart. Clean it out. Pull the weeds and if needed, ask Jesus for a transplant. That is what He died for: to give you a new heart that beats with a deep, enduring love.

How is your heart?

There is No Such Thing as Normal

I want to remind you today that there is no such thing as “normal”.

Life does not move in simple horizontal lines, plotting along connecting dots. We are not given a coloring page per season of life and asked to simply color inside the lines. Life happens…death happens. Circumstances are far out of our control.

You are a child of God who has been made to rise to the occasion. Deal with the reality. You have been empowered to fill the need presented to you with all the gifts and grace God has given to you.

“Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn” – Harriet Beecher Stowe

I want go encourage the brave ones who read this blog to never give up.

When you feel that you can’t take one more step, or that you can’t move one more inch forward – that is NOT THE TIME TO GIVE UP, it is the moment to KEEP MOVING FORWARD.

Don’t worry about defining yourself within our culture.

Don’t limit yourself by trying to find a place to fit.

Do all that you are called to do, all that you are called to be, in the season you find yourself in, with the tools at you have in your hands.

With bold and strong colors – fill in the lines of your season then draw outside of them. Live outside of the lines of others expectations and opinions.

Live for God.

“But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.”

‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10:39‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Your voice matters. What you are doing is important. Your input is vital and needed.

There is no such thing as normal- let go of trying to be normal and go after fulfilling your present purpose in Christ.

God Doesn’t Give Up

About a year ago, one of my oldest and dearest friends got a call from her twin brother. He was calling from jail with his third DUI.  Before he even began to talk, she felt God drop a message in her heart for him. She told him that she wasn’t mad at him but that he would keep finding himself in that kind of situation until he realized how much God loves him and until he stopped running from God.  Her beother told her he wanted to change but she had heard that for so long that she didn’t believe him anymore.

But she believed God.

Today her brother is sober, got involved in Celebrate Recovery and goes to a church he loves. With tears running down her beautiful face she smiled and said, “God doesn’t give up”.

I had tears running down my face as well because in the twenty years we have been friends, I know one of her most fervent prayers  was that her brother would know Jesus like she does.

Sometimes it takes longer than you want it to but I want to remind you today that God hears your prayers. He doesn’t give up on people.

You may stop praying about it.

You may have stopped believing it can ever happen.

You may have lost faith in a person knowing that they will never change.

You may have lost faith in yourself and your own ability to change.

But God doesn’t.

He doesn’t give up.

In fact that the Word says in 1 Cor.13:7 “Love never gives up.”

Never.

God is not asking you to believe in others or even yourself.

He is asking you to believe Him.
