Walking into an unfamiliar room can take courage.
Even when people are friendly, we can find ourselves wondering, “Is there a place for me here?”
At the beginning of Romans 16, Paul introduces Phoebe to the believers in Rome. He asks them to welcome her and offer whatever help she needs. She had helped many people, including Paul. Now he asks this community to care for her. He writes in Romans 16:2, “I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you.” (NIV)
What a beautiful picture of belonging.
We receive care, and we offer care.
We make room for one another.
That is what the family of God looks like.
Someone around you may need that kind of welcome today.
Learn their name.
Introduce them to a friend.
Ask what would help them feel more comfortable.
What does it look like for you to receive someone today “in the Lord in a way worthy of his people”?
To honor them before you know them?
To show them respect before they earn it?
To love them the way Jesus loves you?
One small act of hospitality can help someone take a brave next step and help them grow in their relationship with God.
Father, thank You for welcoming me through Jesus. Help me notice the person who feels uncertain or alone. Show me how to offer practical help and a warm welcome today. In Jesus Powerful Name, Amen.
