“I have the right.”
Sometimes we do.
We may have freedom to make a choice that another believer cannot make with a clear conscience.
But Paul invites us to ask another question: “How will my choice affect someone I love?”
Paul wrote in Romans 14:13, “Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.” (NIV) Paul urged them to consider whether exercising their freedom might pressure someone else to act against their conscience.
That is a tender expression of love: caring enough to slow down and consider another person’s faith.
We don’t have to hide our convictions.
We can hold them with kindness,
resist the urge to pressure someone,
and remember that spiritual growth is more precious than winning an argument.
Today, love may look like listening carefully or willingly setting aside a freedom for someone else’s good.
Let your freedom make room for love.
Lord Jesus, make me attentive to the people around me. Help me use my freedom wisely and care more about their growth than getting my own way. In Your Powerful Name, Amen.
