At first glance, David’s words can sound strong, even harsh.
But David isn’t expressing personal bitterness or seeking revenge.
He is revealing the depth of his love for God.
Throughout Psalms 139 David has reflected on
God’s intimate knowledge, constant presence,
and unfailing care.
By the time he reaches this verse his heart is overwhelmed with devotion
and anything that opposes God grieves him
because he loves God so deeply.
He writes in Psalms 139: 21, “Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?” (NIV)
David’s words remind us that love is never neutral.
The more we love what is good, the more we recognize the damage caused by what is evil.
The more we love God’s truth,
the more we grieve the sin, injustice,
and rebellion that pull people away from Him.
As followers of Jesus, however, we are called to hold an important tension.
We are to reject sin without rejecting people.
We are to stand against rebellion against God
while still extending love to those caught in it.
Jesus modeled this perfectly.
He confronted hypocrisy but welcomed sinners.
He spoke truth boldly but offered grace freely.
He never lowered God’s standards,
yet never stopped pursuing the people who had fallen short of them.
Sometimes it is easier to choose one side or the other.
Some people emphasize truth and forget compassion.
Others emphasize compassion and avoid truth.
Jesus demonstrated both.
He was full of grace and truth.
As His followers, our goal is not to win arguments or prove that we are right.
Our goal is to reflect Christ.
We can stand firmly on God’s Word while loving people deeply.
We can oppose sin without becoming hateful.
We can speak truth while extending mercy because that is exactly what Jesus has done for us.
The closer our hearts grow to God’s heart,
the more we will love what He loves
and grieve what breaks His heart.
Not with anger toward people,
but with a desire to see them
experience His grace and transformation.
