Have you ever wondered what truly impresses God?
Is it eloquence, talent, or spiritual accomplishments? The Apostle Paul answers this with clarity. While seeking and using the spiritual gifts God has given you is wonderful, Paul reminds us that without love, all those efforts amount to mere noise.
He writes in 1 Corinthians 13:1, “If I were to speak with eloquence in earth’s many languages, and in the heavenly tongues of angels, yet I didn’t express myself with love, my words would be reduced to the hollow sound of nothing more than a clanging cymbal.” (TPT)
The love Paul speaks of here is agapē. This Greek word carries a rich depth, describing the love that God has for His people. Agapē is who God is; it’s how He lives, and it expresses the way He feels toward us. It is a love that is endlessly loyal, tirelessly faithful, and unconditionally committed.
Agapē love goes beyond feelings. It is a love that must be demonstrated in action. And here’s the beautiful truth about agapē love—it’s not something we can generate on our own. Agapē love is something we simply receive. When the Holy Spirit fills us, He gives us the ability to love others with the same boundless love God has for us.
This love in action is powerfully echoed in Romans 12:9-21, which says, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord… Do not repay anyone evil for evil… Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (NIV) These verses remind us that love fueled by God is not just an inward emotion but a lifestyle of kindness, humility, and service.
My dear friend, as you grow closer to God, focus on loving others as He does. Consider His agapē love for you, and allow it to flow through you as you serve, speak, and care for others. Whatever gifts God has placed in your life, use them with an open heart, allowing His love to fuel your actions and bring Him glory.
It’s easy to be impressed by someone’s gifts or abilities, but remember that God is most impressed when our lives and efforts are motivated by His love. He is not looking for perfection; He is looking for hearts filled with and overflowing with His selfless, unconditional agapē love.
May God’s incredible love flourish in your life, filling you to overflowing with His Spirit. May each person you influence feel that unconditional love and, in turn, be led to see the heart of God through you.
This is what truly impresses God—not the grandeur of our talents, but the genuine love that reflects His Spirit to the world.
