The Desires of Your Heart

What delights you? What brings you joy? What cheers you up? Maybe it is your loved ones, or your work, a hobby? Home? Maybe it is as simple as a beautiful sunset or a breathtaking view. We are seekers of delight. We are hungry for joy. We are created with the desire to experience joy, peace, and wonder by our Creator.

After the admonishment in the first three verses of Psalms 37 to squash envy when it shows up, to trust God and do good, the next command is to: “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalms 37:4 (NIV)

This beautiful Scripture reminds us that joy, peace and wonder are found first in God Himself. We are made for this – a relationship with Him. When we take delight in Him and our relationship with Him, our souls are fed by the joy of His amazing grace and the abundant love that He showers us with in Christ. We marvel at the wonder of His unending love proven at the cross and the power of sin proven defeated by the Resurrection. Suddenly the world opens up and we are experiencing it with Someone we love and live with.

When we take delight in the Father, He opens our eyes to the abundance of the life around us, within us and the beauty within others. The desire to love and be loved, to connect and be connected to, to cherish and to be cherished comes from the Father’s heart. When we look for humans to meet the deepest desires of our hearts, we will always be disappointed for only the One who can truly fulfill them is the One who created them. Look to God to fill you with that which you crave most and then enjoy the world He opens up for you today.
