Romans 9:15 shows us the truth of God’s heart, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” (NIV)
It is another reminder that God’s mercy is not a reward for good behavior,
it is a gift flowing from His compassionate heart.
You do not have to convince God to be merciful.
Mercy is part of who He is.
That truth humbles us because none of us can take credit for God’s goodness.
It also frees us because we no longer have to exhaust ourselves trying to prove that we are worthy of His love.
Mercy is not the reward for getting everything right.
Mercy is God meeting us in everything that is broken.
We do not earn it through effort,
deserve it through performance,
or secure it by being better than someone else.
We receive it.
Today, I challenge you to release the pressure to perform and open your hands to receive what you could never earn: His love, grace, compassion, power and mercy.
Father, thank You that Your mercy is a gift and not something I have to earn. Help me stop striving for what You freely offer and teach me to live humbly, gratefully, and securely in Your grace. In Jesus Powerful Name, Amen.
