Have you ever noticed how easy it is to define yourself by an old story?
Old mistakes.
Old mindsets.
Old patterns of perceptions.
Like seeing the world from a fear filled place rather than as a love held child of God.
Or seeing a present relationship from the pattern of a past one.
Or maybe regarding a present situation from an old tainted lens.
Sometimes we carry them around long after God has already set us free.
But Romans 6 reminds us of something powerful: our old self was crucified with Christ. Romans 6:6 says, “For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with…” (NIV)
That means the truest thing about you is not your past or patterns that you learned.
It’s your new life in Jesus and your new identity in Him.
Yes, you may still feel the pull of old patterns. Every one of us does. But those patterns are no longer your identity. In Christ, you have a new identity, a new family and a new way of living.
You are not the person you used to be.
You have been set free to become a new person.
You are not a child of the world, you are a child of God.
And that journey begins with believing what God already says is true – you belong to Him.
Your past may explain you, but it no longer defines you.
God’s love does.
He doesn’t erase the past, He gives you new eyes to see it through.
God’s love through Christ transforms the patterns of the past into your present hope for your future.
My prayer for you today is that you walk in the freedom of your new identity: you are loved, redeemed, and being made new every single day.
