After a long day walking the dusty streets of Jerusalem and living in the tension brewing in the crowded city, Jesus had supper with His friends. Before they began their evening, John 13:4-5 records that Jesus “laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.” (ESV)
It was a servant’s job.
Dirty feet need to be washed.
Jesus took the servant’s place.
The hands that would be pierced on the cross, washed the dirt of the feet of those He loved.
Gently, thoroughly.
Feet that would get dirty tomorrow.
The point wasn’t that their feet wouldn’t get dirty again.
The point was to let Jesus wash them.
And if the Creator of the Universe wants to wash away the dirt you have walked through, let Him.
Then Jesus said to do this same thing for others.
There is no small act of love.
In fact, often the smallest acts of love make the biggest impact on people’s lives. Like washing dirty feet, washing dirty faces, cleaning dirty dishes or gently and thoroughly washing hurting hearts with the love of the Savior that lives within you.
May you allow the Savior to wash away the dirt of the day, everyday.
May His love overflow in your heart today and inspire you to take the servants place as He did.
