To fret means to worry incessantly and it is essentially compulsive worrying. Psalms 37:1-2 says, “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.” (NIV)
The Hebrew word used for fret in this verse is “charrah” which means to burn something until it is charred. It is a powerful word picture of a spark of fire that ignites a fire that burns and burns and burns until it is charred.
Do not fret.
Then the rest of the verse tells us what to not fret about: how others are living and the choices they are making.
My friend, get your eyes off others and what they are doing.
Stop wasting your energy being envious of those who seem to “have it all” and getting it all the wrong way.
Don’t allow someone else’s highlight reel spark a fire of envy within your heart that consumes your mind.
You are wasting your time, energy and calling.
Don’t get distracted.
You have nothing to learn from them and don’t want anything from them.
You are called to God through the sacrifice of Christ and filled with His Spirit to do His work in your world.
Instead of focusing on what others are doing and get your focus on God and what He is doing.
Do the work God has given you to do, trust Him and do good.
