1 Corinthians 13:10-11 states, “When I was a child, I spoke about childish matters, for I saw things like a child and reasoned like a child. But the day came when I matured, and I set aside my childish ways.” (TPT)
This verse draws a powerful parallel between maturity and love. The Apostle Paul uses the picture of moving from childhood to adulthood to show us what it looks like to grow in our faith. As children, we see the world in fragments. Our understanding is limited, our reasoning often self-centered. But as we mature, especially in our walk with God, those petty, fragmented ways of thinking are replaced with something deeper and more complete. At the heart of spiritual maturity is love.
Love becoming mature in us is the point at which we trade our “childish ways” of criticism, selfishness, or striving for personal gain for the expansive, selfless love of God. It’s in love that we find clarity, purpose, and the reflection of God’s heart.
God’s love helps us see beyond the partial knowledge we have now. Prophecies, wisdom, and knowledge, as precious as they are, can’t capture the fullness of God’s plan. But love gives us a glimpse of what’s eternal.
God’s love is the completeness we move toward; it’s what lasts when everything else fades.
Growing in God’s love means becoming less concerned with being “right” and more focused on being present, forgiving, and kind. It means setting aside impatience and judgment, and instead choosing grace. It involves shifting from a mindset of receiving to one of giving.
Today, I am praying that God would show you where you might still be clinging to “childish ways.” Are there areas where pride, fear, or resentment hold you back from loving fully? Ask God to continue to grow you so that His love becomes your foundation and the continuing driving force of your life.
Because in the end, it won’t be our knowledge or achievements that define us, but the way we loved.
God’s love is the maturity we’re called to, the lasting mark of a life transformed by God.
