The early church that the Apostle Paul was writing to was being persecuted at every turn. They were persecuted by powerful Jewish opposers as well as local Idol makers who were losing money. Persecution, suffering and being falsely accused was the norm these new Christ followers lived in. Soon a subtle idea began to infiltrate their ranks. Some were beginning to believe that martyrdom, instead of faith in Jesus, would wash away their sin.
They began to see suffering well as the proof of their love for God even though Jesus Himself said in John 13:35, “they will know you by your love.” (NIV)
The Apostle Paul is trying to bring their focus back to the truth when he writes, “And if I were to be so generous as to give away everything I owned to feed the poor, and to offer my body to be burned as a martyr, without the pure motive of love, I would gain nothing of value.” 1 Corinthians 13:3 (TPT)
Sharing with those in need and standing strong for Jesus in the face of persecution is important, but not the most important proof of our faith. It is possible to do all the “right things” and it is all empty religion instead of a rich relationship. I’ve lived that life and it is miserable.
Love is always the best measure.
A religious spirit will always whisper, “Show everyone how much you love God by your works,” but the Holy Spirit of God whispers, “You are dearly loved precious child and I’ve got you. You are accepted, your sins are forgiven. Fear not death, nor poverty. Let my Love fuel all that you do.”
May the Spirit of God empower you to know who and whose you are as you live your life loved and allow God’s great agape love to fuel all you do.
