To fret means to worry incessantly. It is compulsive worrying. In fact, the Hebrew word used for fret is “charrah” which means to burn something until it is charred. It is a powerful word picture of a spark of fire that ignites a fire that burns and burns and burns until it is charred. The rest of the verse tells us what not to fret about: “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away.” Psalms 37:1-2 (NIV)
In others words, stop worrying about how others are living their lives and the choices they are making. Focus on how you are living your life and the life-giving choices you are making empowered by the Spirit of God. Get your eyes off others and what they are doing and get your focus on God and what He is doing. Don’t be envious of those who seem to “have it all” and getting it all the wrong way. Don’t allow someone else’s highlight reel spark a fire of envy within your heart that consumes your mind. You are wasting your energy and your calling. Don’t get distracted. Leave evil people to God. You have nothing to learn from them and don’t want anything from them. You are called to God through the sacrifice of Christ and filled with His very Spirit to do His work in your world. Do your work, trust God and do good.
