Your past experience.
The above determines how you interact with your world and the people in it. It is what you learn as you grow up and fall back on when you are tired. It is how you live.
In Jesus, you have been equipped to interact with your world in a new way. You have a new way to love them.
One that is not based on your nature but on God’s, not based on your upbringing but on God’s out pouring.
No matter who you are or where you come from, in Christ, you get to learn how to love God’s way. The way He originally created you to live. The way Jesus loves you.
It isn’t about habit building.
It is about habit surrendering and God embracing.
“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline.
Colossians 3:12 MSG
Compassion – moved to action from a heart that is stired with passion to reach out and love someone who could never repay you and has nothing to that would benefit you. This is how Jesus loves you.
Kindness – a way of life that sees others with eyes that see past the superficial and hands that reach out regardless of worthiness or an expectation of repercussion. This is how Jesus loves you.
Humility– knowing your worth and not making it the requirement for someone else to know it before you will love them. This is how Jesus loves you.
Quiet Strength, Discipline – the kind of strength that gets up when it is tired, does the right thing when it doesn’t feel like it, holds on when it wants to let go, pushes through when it would be easier to just stop. The kind of strength that isn’t pretty, it is sturdy. It has scars. It doesn’t stop.
This is how Jesus loves you.
This is your new way to live.
