For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:6, 7 NIV)
God has given you a gift. He gives it to you as a spark and expects YOU to fan it into a fire.
It is up to you to grow your gift.
You must feed a fire, work a fire and tend to a fire to keep it going. I should know, I am terrible at keeping a real fire going. My husband is fabulous at it, mostly because he pays attention and pokes at it, feeds it and adjusts it around until it is a blazing fire warming the whole house.
What has God sparked in you?
What are you doing to grow it?
What is stopping you?
That is why the verse after “fan the flame is “God has not given us a Spirit of fear”.
When God sparks a gift for you to use and grow in, he also gives you His Spirit with three vital things to help you do it:
Don’t focus on the fear, focus on the Spirit of God within you and grow your gift.
