Tonight is Halloween and there will be many masks worn. Whether made of plastic, rubber or face paint, many masks will cover precious faces. How fun it is to pretend to be someone else? It is a game and for fun tonight but there are millions who are wearing the invisible mask of shame everyday of their lives. For some it has been covering their faces for so long that they don’t even notice it anymore. In fact, they put on “other” masks to cover it up: happy mask, normal mask, strong mask, independent mask. We are not born with this invisible covering of shame- it comes with sin and sin’s awful stain upon the heart. Whether it is from something that happened to you or something you did, it feels the same and feels permanent.
Every time I do an God Encounter Weekend or meet someone for a one on one session, I see it. Through staunch declarations or tearful confessions, I see it. And through the good news of the cross and God’s amazing grace, often I get to help take it off.
• The shadow of shame haunts and destroys.
• The root of shame seems immovable and unchangeable.
• The fruit of shame is wrapped in self hatred, fear, and deep insecurity.
But this is the not the truth (it feels true, but it isn’t)!
This is the truth:
“I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.” (Psalm 34:4, 5 NLT)
• The light of God dispels the darkness and chases the shadows away.
• The truth of the Cross, uproots sin’s hold and destroys it’s stain.
• The fruit of the Spirit is wrapped in love, joy, peace patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
It begins with a prayer (keep praying).
It is a promise(keep believing).
It is a process(take one step at a time and don’t give up).
It is the treasure of redemption and restoration. It is the joy of God’s heart to hear, answer and redeem His precious children. To restore to them that which has been stolen. This is His plan for you.
Shame is a whisper imbedding sin’s lies into the fabric of your heart. Salvation is a shout, a sweet song, a persevering war cry that rises within you to shake off the shadow and walk in freedom. It is the voice of your Savior welling up with uncontainable love to break the chains of shame and once and for all shatter the invisible mask.
This is my prayer for you.
“For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. “ (2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV)
