The Right Kind of Stubborn

“With all this going for us, my dear, dear friends, stand your ground. And don’t hold back. Throw yourselves into the work of the Master, confident that nothing you do for him is a waste of time or effort.” (1 Corinthians 15:58 MSG)

The Greek wording here for “stand your ground” is very strong. It means to be “unmovable” , “firmly persistent”. Hm, sounds like stubborn to me. We Grassos are a stubborn lot. My prayer is that we are stubborn for all the right things. Stubborn to not give up. Stubborn to go after our purpose. Stubborn in loving each other the best we can. If you have a stubborn streak begin to use it for your good. Take it back from the toolbox of the enemy and put it into the hands of God.

Be unmovable in your faith. Firmly persistent is going after God’s call for your life. Let nothing move you. Not fear or finances, lack of time or lack of support. Not doubt, not discouragement move you from doing what you know is right.

When you are unmovable in your faith you can unabashedly throw yourself into the work of it. The original Greek word used here for “Throw yourself” means to go beyond a fixed number or measure. In other words with God you can exceed your own expectations. Give yourself fully, going beyond the limits you have set in your head. Shatter the glass ceiling of your mentality and go for it! Throw yourself in the work of the Master, His work in your life and His work through your life.

Throw yourself into God’s purpose for your job.
Throw yourself into God’s purpose for your schooling.
Throw yourself into God’s plan for your marriage.
Throw yourself into God’s plan for your children and home.
Throw yourself into God’s purpose for you in the season you are in now.

This is the kicker, because the season you are in now might not feel like a place that will move you towards your purpose. Nonetheless, throw yourself into it wholeheartedly anyway. Trust God -nothing you do for God is a waste of time or effort.

There is more for you.

“When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out;
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than,
It seems to a faint and faltering man,
Often the struggler has given up,
When he might have captured the victor’s cup,
And he learned too late when the night slipped down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit
It’s when things seem worst that you must not quit.”

Don’t quit. Push through. Throw yourself into your life. Be the right kind of stubborn today.
