On the way camping a couple of years ago we were working our way up the backside of the Sierra Nevada’s. It isn’t a road alot of people take and the road itself is narrow, cracked and worn down. We were expecting it to be that way and were ready for slow going, sharp turns, hills and dips.
What we weren’t expecting was a woman standing in the middle of the road with a stop sign. It was a strange sight, we hadn’t seen anyone in the road for miles and there nothing out there but a road up a mountain. Then we turn a corner and this young woman is standing in the middle of road with a stop sign. Now, Bobby and I have seen things like this before so we calmly stopped and waited. My sons had not and anxious to get to the top of the mountain, started to complain and get upset.
“What is happening?”,
“Why are we stopping?”,
“We are never going to get there!”,
“Can’t you just go around her?”
We explained to them that the best thing to do is to wait patiently and when it was safe, a pilot car would escort us through the road work. Sure enough, soon a truck with a sign that said “Pilot Car, Follow Me” pulled out in front of us. They were repaving the road and one side of it had black loose gravel on it. It was obvious after just a few minutes of following the truck that it would have been dangerous going without him.
As we were silently winding our way on one side of the rode and following close behind the truck, my eyes focused in on the sign “pilot car, follow me” and it made me think of the times in my life when I was ” on my way” and the road started to feel narrow with sharp turns, hills and dips. I knew I was on the right road and wholeheartedly pursuing God’s purpose for me life but it was slow going. Then a big STOP sign would appear and I would feel stuck in the middle of nowhere. I would get impatient and frustrated peppering God with questions:
Why are we stopping?”,
” I am never going to get there!”,
“Can’t I just go around this?
It is there that my Lord comes close to me, and says “I know you don’t know why there is a stop sign here, but I do. I can see what is around the corner and it will be treacherous ground. Follow me- I will navigate you through this dangerous place and deliver you safe to continue onto your destination.”
Jesus answered, “I am the way, the truth and the life“.
Sometimes we need a big “Follow Me” sign. Something stops us in our tracks and makes us pay attention.
Heb. 13:5 “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”
In the origianal Greek it comes across even stronger and the Amplified Version does a good job of translating the original Intent:
“For He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless, nor forsake nor let [you] down relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]”
The road to your destiny is not well traveled and is full of twists and turns. You can not see what is around the corner but your Lord and Savior can. He does more than see it and warn you about it. He walks you through the treacherous times. He goes before you and when you need a sign, he puts it on his back and it says “Pilot Car: Follow me”.
As you pursue your purpose and go after your God given destiny, stay on course! Slow down when the road gets rough and let God lead you every step of the way.
