More than song by Lady Gaga, it is the reality of eternity, a glimpse into heaven. Living your life with the realization that we are all walking on the edge of eternity.
Those who know the bliss of accepting God’s invitation of salvation and have walked with Him here on earth come to the edge of glory without fear.
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment.” (1 John 4:18 NIV)
On the morning of December 22, 1899 one of the great preachers of his time, DL Moody, came to edge of glory. Before he slipped all the way through to it, his son heard him slowly articulate these words:
“Earth recedes, heaven opens before me”.
Will said to him, “Father, you are dreaming”, to which Moody replied, “No. This is no dream, Will. It is beautiful. It is like a trance. If this is death, it is sweet, God is calling me and I must go. Don’t call me back”.
The words spoken over 100 years ago are echoed by a young man who himself had come to the edge of glory just last month. He experienced God’s peace & presence when his heart gave out and he stopped breathing for three minutes.
His name is Ben Breedlove and he tells his story in this YouTube Video posted December 18, 2011 and I played this last night for our youth group:
Ben was prepared, even longing, for eternity. Then, just seven days after he posted this video he died. He stepped into eternity on Christmas Day, 2011.
Today I am reminded me that as a child of God, I am a stranger, an alien on earth – for my home is with God. My destiny is beyond the veil of mortality. Death is not the end- it is only the beginning.
The year that DL Moody died, he spoke the following words to a crowd in New York City:
“Someday you will read in the paper that Moody is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now… I was born of the flesh in 1837, I was born of the Spirit in 1855. That which is born of the flesh may die. That which is born of the Spirit shall live forever”.
There is no greater thing than having the hope of heaven.
If you have it- share it.
If you don’t – you can get it today. It starts with an honest prayer.
When you get to the edge of glory- what will you see?
