As I mentioned the last blog, my summer started out with a search to find…contentment. Since I was wrestling with a sneaky suspicion of discontent, I did what I always do – I ask God a question(s).
It went something like this,
” What the heck?”
“I was doing great and now I’m frustrated!”
“Am I imagining this, cause in most areas of my life I am uber happy.”
“Can a girl get some help here?”
And help did come in the medium of words – The Word to be specific. I opened my Bible and came to a favorite verse of mine that has been impacting my life since my Master’s Commission days in Phoenix (aka 1991),
Psalms 37: 4-7.
Trust in the Lord and do good. Dwell in the land and feed on His faithfulness.
Delight yourself also in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord and He will bring it to pass.
Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him. Don’t fret, cease from anger, forsake wrath.
Trust, Delight, Commit, Rest – my very own personal biblical mantra for the summer.
Whenever I began to feel that “I am frustrated but don’t know why” feeling,
I repeated to myself: Trust, Delight, Commit, Rest.
Trust. Because God knows what is happening, especially when you don’t. Trust and do good – don’t be idle but be productive and creative where you are. Dwell in the land – to me this means to be present in your life and enjoy the moments. Don’t worry so much about the future that you miss out on today and the loved ones that are within your reach. Trust God.
Delight. Delight in who God has made you to be. Delight in your marriage (if it applies), delight in being singe and free (if it applies). Delight in your little one’s smile, your workplace or where ever you are dwelling. Have you lost your delight in life? Go on a treasure hunt and find it. Clean your house (or life) up and reclaim those things that bring you joy from under the couch where the pressures and crisis of life have shoved them. Delight, smile, enjoy.
Delight in the Lord and all He encompasses. He is the Light of Life and His presence can dwell in every moment of your life. Connect with Him through His Word, Worship, or in whatever way you do. I’m a wordy – what are you? Get busy having a blast in His daily presence and leave the rest to Him. Your job is to delight, His job is to bring you the desires of your heart. Pretty good deal if you ask me.
Commit your way to Him. This one for me is pretty simple (I didn’t say easy, I said simple). My way, the road I’m on – I give it to God. I say “It’s Yours, do whatever you want with it.” That’s it. He will bring “it” to pass, the “whatever you want” part. Which, by the way, often lines up with the “desires of your heart” part. Which I think is very cool.
Then REST for crying out loud! You don’t have to worry or stress about all the things you can’t control. I love that the verse gets more detailed: Rest-Wait patiently-don’t fret-cease from anger-forsake wrath. Cause Honey, anger in this case is only going to make you very tired. Worrying about it every day will only wear down the tread of your tennis shoes as go in circles trying to figure it out. Comparing yourself to others will only depress you. Taking out your anger at “feeling stuck” only hurts those closest to you. REST in His grace.
Trust, delight, commit, rest.
Trust, delight, commit, rest.
I don’t know what these verses will do for you, but they saved my sanity this summer!
Go ahead – TRUST DELIGHT COMMIT REST!
